There is a small park on a lakeshore property of an eighteenth century mansion. A large heath separates the park from a little goldfish pond. It is so close to the lake that on windy days the waves from the lake spill into the pond. In the park there is a folly, a gazebo, with a sunny west facing veranda and large windows overlooking the lake.
When approached to develop a project on the theme of beauty I decided to set the fictional architecture of an eighteenth century mansion against the contemporary utilitarian structure of the Service Canada building. I am interested in the tumultuous history of eighteenth century Europe. Our image of that era conjures decadent chateau fantasies that clash with its anticipation of today’s consumer society.
