Mirabilia

Jakub Dolejs, Mirabilia

Mirabilia is both a record and investigation of Jakub Dolejš’s work produced during an artist residency in Paris. As the title suggests, Dolejš’s work is a photographic re-creation of Johan Zoffany’s painting The Tribuna of the Uffizi, an eighteenth-century record of the Tribune in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. In her essay art historian Lynda Morris deftly sketches and weaves together Dolejš’s diverse influences – from his childhood and academic training in Prague to the fluid imagery of computer digital programs and the Vancouver art scene of the 1990s, from theatre and movies to eighteenth-century European art and Socialist Realism. Morris firmly places Dolejš’s work conceptually in the twenty-first century, while simultaneously in dialogue with European art history and a complex ideological past. A beautiful object in itself, this book’s sumptuous colours, subtle textures, historically nuanced typefaces and overall design mirrors the sensuousness of the historical images against which Dolejš plays out his aesthetic dance.
